Technology Protects Older Australians from Respiratory Infections

Innovative germicidal ultraviolet (GUV) technology is reducing respiratory infections among elderly Australians in aged care facilities by over 12%, offering a practical solution to safeguard vulnerable residents. As health challenges mount, critics argue the New South Wales (NSW) Labor government’s slow adoption of such technologies leaves seniors at risk, despite the proven benefits of cost-effective air purification systems.

A recent study from Flinders University and the South Australian Health and Medical Research Institute (SAHMRI), published in JAMA Internal Medicine, tested GUV appliances in four aged care facilities. These devices, which use ultraviolet-C (UV-C) light to neutralize airborne viruses like influenza and Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV), cut infection rates by 12.2%, equating to 92 fewer cases per 1,000 residents annually. “This technology is a game-changer for protecting our elderly,” said lead researcher Dr. Andrew Shoubridge, noting its easy installation and affordability. The trial showed no significant reduction in short-term infections but delivered substantial long-term benefits, particularly for the 250,000 Australians in aged care.

Older adults, especially those in communal living, face heightened risks from respiratory infections due to weakened immune systems and close contact with staff and visitors. The study highlights GUV’s potential to complement existing measures like vaccinations and personal protective equipment (PPE). Professor Geraint Rogers emphasized, “This could reduce hospitalisations and prepare us for future pandemics”. Yet, critics point to the Labor government’s sluggish response to respiratory risks, with inadequate funding for aged care safety upgrades. Shadow Health Minister Matt Kean argued, “Labor’s focus on bureaucracy over innovation delays life-saving solutions”.

While GUV technology is already used in food processing and labs, its healthcare application remains underexplored. The study calls for further research to optimize deployment, but its success signals a path forward. As Australia braces for seasonal outbreaks, integrating GUV systems could bolster defenses for vulnerable seniors, provided the government prioritizes practical, proven technologies over political posturing.
