Uber Eats Driver Assaulted During Late-Night Carjacking in Perth Shares Trauma

An Uber Eats driver in Perth has been left traumatised and fearful of returning to evening work after a violent carjacking late at night in the suburb of Como.

The victim, Areeb, a 26-year-old international student, was nearing the end of his shift when the incident occurred. What should have been a routine delivery turned into a terrifying ordeal. As he approached the customer with the food, he was unexpectedly attacked. He later described the moment, saying, “I was like, ‘Hey, here’s your food,’ but instead of taking the order, he just started attacking me.”

Areeb was dragged from his car, punched repeatedly, and left bleeding from the nose and lip. He cried out for help, and nearby residents came to his aid. While his physical injuries are healing, Areeb said the emotional trauma has been harder to overcome, leaving him anxious and hyperaware, particularly during nighttime hours.

Police later arrested a 25-year-old man after the stolen car was involved in a crash. The suspect has been charged with several offences, including aggravated robbery, assault causing bodily harm, unlawful use of a motor vehicle, and assaulting a public officer. He is due to face court again next week.

Areeb expressed gratitude for the bystanders who stepped in to help during the assault. He said their kindness has helped restore his faith in the broader community.
