New South Wales Police have launched a criminal investigation after a serious crash in Coffs Harbour left a 17-year-old boy in critical condition, and the rider of an unregistered motorcycle allegedly fled the scene.

The incident occurred shortly after 12:30 a.m. on Sunday, 27 July 2025. Officers from the Coffs/Clarence Police District were patrolling Orlando Street when they observed a black and white motorcycle without registration plates being ridden on the road.

Soon after, police discovered a 17-year-old male with serious injuries near a damaged blue sports utility vehicle (SUV) parked on Bradley Street. According to initial inquiries, the motorcycle appears to have collided with the parked SUV, causing the teenager to be thrown from the vehicle. Investigators believe he may have been a passenger. The person believed to have been operating the motorcycle reportedly fled the scene on foot.

Emergency crews from NSW Ambulance treated the teenager at the scene before transporting him to Coffs Harbour Hospital. He remains in serious condition.

Police have seized the SUV for forensic examination, and a crime scene has been established. The Crash Investigation Unit is conducting further inquiries into the circumstances surrounding the incident and working to confirm the identity of the rider.

Authorities are treating the matter as a criminal case due to the use of an unregistered vehicle and the rider’s failure to remain at the scene, both of which are offences under New South Wales law. Under the Road Transport Act 2013, failing to stop and assist after causing injury may result in fines up to 30 penalty units (around $3,300) and up to 18 months in prison for a first offence, or a maximum of two years for repeat offences.

Police are appealing to anyone who may have witnessed the crash or seen the motorcycle before the incident to come forward. They are also asking for any relevant dashcam or CCTV footage from the area to be submitted to assist with the investigation.

Reports can be made to Crime Stoppers by calling 1800 333 000 or by submitting information online. Police have requested that the public not report information via social media platforms.
