Former NFL linebacker and Super Bowl champion Bryan Braman has died at the age of 38, following a tough battle with a very rare form of cancer, his agent confirmed on Thursday.

Braman, who played for both the Houston Texans and the Philadelphia Eagles during his seven-year career, was first diagnosed in February. Despite undergoing several advanced treatments and surgeries, his condition worsened over time, ultimately leading to his untimely passing.

“Bryan Braman was a warrior in every sense  on the field and in life, facing every battle with unshakeable grit and heart,” said his agent, Sean Stellato. “His passing leaves a void not just in football, but in the spirit of every underdog who ever dared to fight.”

According to updates posted on a GoFundMe page launched to help cover Braman’s medical expenses, he underwent multiple surgeries at a Seattle-based medical facility. He also received Car T cell therapy, a treatment that reprograms a patient’s own immune cells to fight cancer more effectively.

Initially, the treatment showed hopeful signs, with the cancerous mass beginning to shrink. However, the cancer eventually became more aggressive and spread rapidly around his vital organs. Despite further chemotherapy treatments, his health continued to decline.

Following the announcement of his death, tributes poured in from former teammates and fans. Retired NFL star J.J. Watt, who played alongside Braman on the Texans, contributed $10,000 to the GoFundMe page and posted a heartfelt message: “Rest in peace, brother. Gone far too soon.”

Stellato also honored Braman on social media, posting an image of a signed jersey and writing, “My heart hurts. I love you Bryan.”

Braman’s journey to the NFL was anything but easy. He began his college football career at the University of Idaho, then transferred to Long Beach City College before finishing at West Texas A&M University. He was not selected in the NFL Draft but signed with the Houston Texans in 2011 as an undrafted free agent.

Known for his intensity and fearless play, Braman became a standout special teams player. He gained attention in 2011 for making a tackle without his helmet during a game against the Tennessee Titans  a moment that made him a fan favorite in Houston. In 2012, he was named a Pro Bowl alternate for his special teams performance.

Braman later joined the Philadelphia Eagles, where he spent four seasons and played a part in the team’s Super Bowl LII victory over the New England Patriots in 2018.
