Police Investigate Mill Park Match Assault

Victoria Police have launched a criminal investigation after a man was seriously assaulted following a local soccer match at a reserve on Crampton Crescent, Mill Park, on Saturday, 6 July 2025.

The incident occurred shortly after 2:30 p.m., when a brief on-field altercation broke out between two players from opposing teams. One of the individuals involved, a 33-year-old man from St Kilda, was shown a red card by match officials and instructed to leave the field.

As the man was exiting the field, he was allegedly confronted and attacked by a group of spectators. The assault left the man with serious injuries, including a fractured spine. Emergency services were immediately called to the scene. Paramedics treated the man on site before transporting him to the hospital, where he remains under medical care.

Victoria Police confirmed that they have obtained video footage showing parts of the incident. Detectives from the Mill Park Division have since released the footage publicly in hopes of identifying the individuals involved. The suspects seen in the footage have not yet been identified, and no arrests have been made at this stage of the investigation.

Authorities are now calling on the public for assistance. Investigators are particularly interested in speaking with anyone who attended the match and may have witnessed the altercation or the subsequent assault. Police are also urging spectators who may have recorded mobile phone footage or taken photographs during or after the incident to come forward.

The incident has sparked concern among local sports organisers, with calls for increased security at amateur events to prevent similar situations in the future. Officials have also reminded the public to respect referees’ decisions and to leave conflict resolution to the appropriate authorities.
