A 17-year-old boy has been charged with manslaughter following the tragic death of a nurse in Edgewater, a northern suburb of Perth, after he allegedly struck the woman while riding an electric dirt bike through a public park.

The incident occurred shortly after police attempted to intercept the teen, reportedly activating lights and sirens about five minutes before the fatal crash. While authorities have not explicitly confirmed that the collision was the result of a pursuit, early investigations suggest the boy was known to police before the incident.

The victim, a 51-year-old nurse, was walking along a path in Emerald Park on July 8 when she was struck. She later died in the hospital. Western Australia Police have stated that the e-bike was not legally registered for road use, and the rider was not wearing a helmet at the time.

Detective Sergeant Paul Giuffre told radio station 6PR, “Anything like this is just tragic… My heart goes out to the family and friends. It’s horrible.” Police have said that charges were laid after reviewing CCTV footage and eyewitness accounts.

The teenager is currently being held in custody at Banksia Hill Detention Centre. His legal representatives told Perth Children’s Court that he is displaying signs of deteriorating mental health, including compulsive floor-cleaning behaviors. The boy has been diagnosed with ADHD and autism and is a participant in the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS). His parents told the court they have been unable to manage his behavior and that he has not been attending school.

Prosecutors also told the court that the teen had stopped taking his prescribed medication and had instead been using cannabis. A small quantity of the drug was allegedly found in a backpack at the scene. Investigators are examining mobile phone messages for possible evidence of drug dealing.

Under Western Australian law, e-bikes that can exceed 25km/h or are throttle-operated are considered illegal for public roads and paths unless registered and insured. Police have reiterated warnings about the dangers of unregulated electric vehicles.

The boy is expected to reappear in court next week for a bail application. The name of the deceased has not been released out of respect for her family’s privacy.
