Golden Square Upsets Gisborne in Tight BFNL Match

Golden Square has kept its finals hopes alive in the Bendigo Football Netball League by staging a thrilling five‑point win over Gisborne in Round 14.

Played at Wade Street Oval, the Bulldogs overturned a two‑goal deficit with three goals in four minutes during the final quarter. They then held firm in the closing stages to secure an 11.12 (78) to 10.13 (73) victory, an upset lauded by commentators as “the upset of the season.”  

The result lifts Golden Square to a competitive position in the finals race, sitting just four percentage points and ladder points behind fifth‑placed Strathfieldsaye. 

Golden Square coach Brad Eaton praised the team’s resilience and recent consistency:

“We’ve had a more stable line‑up, and our form has improved in the second half of the season.” 

Late in the game, Jack Stewart scored from close range, Hugh Freckleton levelled the scores, and Jordan Rosengren slotted the go‑ahead goal after an important clearance by Dylan Hird. 

Coach Eaton highlighted the defensive effort:

“Gisborne has a lot of quality across the ground. Our players stuck to their roles, applied pressure, and limited their run.” 

Standouts included Hird, Stewart, Rosengren, Tom Strauch, Noah Warfe, and Daniel Keating. 

After a bye this weekend, Golden Square returns to face ladder leaders Sandhurst at Wade Street. The outcomes of these games and the final round match against Strathfieldsaye will be pivotal in determining the final top five.
