Lufthansa CEO’s Wife Investigated After Fatal Hit-and-Run in Italy

The wife of Lufthansa CEO Carsten Spohr is under investigation for vehicular manslaughter after allegedly striking and killing a 24 year-old babysitter in Sardinia before returning to Germany. Vivian Alexandra Spohr, 51, was driving a BMW X5 in the luxury resort town of Porto Cervo when she hit Gaia Costa at a pedestrian crossing on Tuesday afternoon. Reports indicate Spohr continued driving until bystanders intervened, leaving the scene only after fainting from shock. Despite the ongoing investigation, the mother of two has since flown back to Berlin.

According to Italian media, emergency responders spent 20 minutes attempting to revive Costa, who succumbed to severe head injuries. The tragic incident has sparked outrage, particularly after Spohr left the country while authorities were still gathering evidence. Under Italian law, involuntary manslaughter carries potential prison time, but legal experts note that cross-border cases often face complications. Local prosecutors have yet to confirm whether they will seek Spohr’s extradition or pursue charges remotely.

The case has drawn comparisons to other high-profile hit-and-run incidents involving wealthy individuals, raising questions about accountability and privilege. Critics argue that Spohr’s swift departure suggests an expectation of preferential treatment, though Lufthansa has not commented on the matter. Meanwhile, Costa’s family and friends have expressed grief and frustration, demanding justice for the young woman, who was reportedly working as a babysitter for a vacationing family at the time of the accident.

As the investigation unfolds, the incident highlights the challenges of enforcing justice across international borders especially when the accused holds significant influence. While Spohr has not been formally charged, the case has ignited debate over whether wealth and status can shield individuals from legal consequences. For now, Italian authorities must navigate diplomatic and legal hurdles to determine the next steps, while Costa’s loved ones mourn a life cut tragically short.
