A fatal head-on collision occurred near Rockhampton on Saturday afternoon, prompting an investigation by the Forensic Crash Unit.

According to Queensland Police, the crash happened around 2:30pm on Emu Park Road in Nankin, just east of Thompson Point Road. A westbound Mazda 3 collided with an eastbound Nissan Patrol under circumstances still under investigation.

The 21-year-old female driver of the Mazda, a Rockhampton local, died at the scene. A male passenger in his twenties travelling with her sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to hospital.

The Nissan Patrol’s female driver and a male passenger, both also in their twenties, were taken to hospital as well. Their injuries were described as non-life-threatening, but police confirmed all involved are receiving medical attention and support.

Authorities have not released the identities of those involved, as family notifications are still underway. Police confirmed that forensic teams are working to reconstruct the crash scene and retrieve data from the vehicles involved.

The Forensic Crash Unit is continuing its inquiries into the cause of the collision. Investigators are examining road conditions, vehicle speeds, mechanical factors, and any potential driver behaviours that may have contributed to the incident.

Queensland Police continue to urge drivers to avoid the high-risk behaviours known as the ‘Fatal Five’: speeding, impaired driving (from alcohol or drugs), failure to wear seatbelts, fatigue, and distraction. These factors are commonly linked to deadly road incidents across the state.

Traffic incidents remain a leading cause of death and injury in Queensland, with young drivers especially vulnerable. According to police data, consistent driver awareness and adherence to road rules can significantly reduce the likelihood of fatal and serious crashes.

Road safety initiatives are ongoing throughout Queensland. Local campaigns, community engagement, and increased roadside enforcement are among the tools being used to reduce road trauma.

Authorities encourage motorists to remain vigilant and responsible at all times, especially when driving on regional roads like Emu Park Road, which may have variable conditions and high-speed limits.

Educational materials on how to avoid the Fatal Five are available on the Queensland Police Service website. Anyone who witnessed the crash or has dashcam footage from the area around 2:30pm is urged to contact Policelink or Crime Stoppers to assist with investigations.
