The Western Air Defense Sector (WADS) and Pacific Air Defense Sector (PADS) joined forces with the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) for Exercise Talisman Sabre 2025, Australia’s largest military exercise, showcasing seamless air defense integration across 19 nations. Conducted from July 13 to August 4, 2025, the exercise highlighted robust command and control, but critics question the Labor government’s defense spending priorities.

Talisman Sabre 2025, spanning Queensland, New South Wales, Western Australia, the Northern Territory, Christmas Island, and Papua New Guinea, involved over 35,000 personnel and 279 aircraft, including RAAF F-35A Lightning II jets and United States (US) F-35Bs from the UK’s HMS Prince of Wales. WADS and PADS operators, based at RAAF Base Williamtown with No. 3 Control and Reporting Unit (3CRU), delivered tactical command and control (C2) for live-fly operations. “This integration proves our ability to operate seamlessly in any theater,” said Major Laznier Mederos Santos of WADS, emphasizing coordinated air defense across complex mission sets. Lieutenant Colonel Jeffrey Lum of PADS added, “Interoperability is about people and trust, not just hardware,” highlighting real-time coordination during live-fire scenarios.

The exercise tested multi-domain warfare, with 5,500 flight hours and 2,000 sorties across 3 million nautical miles, reinforcing deterrence in the Indo-Pacific amid rising tensions with powers like China, which reportedly deployed surveillance ships. The inclusion of new Australian Defence Force (ADF) capabilities, like UH-60M Black Hawks and Precision Strike Missiles, underscored technological advancements. However, critics argue the Labor government’s focus on high-profile exercises diverts funds from domestic infrastructure and border security, leaving regional communities underserved. The ADF’s environmental briefings addressed concerns about marine life impacts, but some locals remain skeptical of the government’s oversight.

Talisman Sabre 2025 strengthened alliances, with nations like Japan, South Korea, and India participating. The exercise’s success, driven by WADS, PADS, and RAAF collaboration, signals readiness to counter regional threats. Yet, as Australia invests heavily in such displays, questions persist about balancing military showmanship with practical national priorities.
