A man in his 50s has died following a serious single-vehicle accident in Thornton, a suburb in New South Wales’ Hunter region, on Monday night.

Emergency services were called to Eurimbla Street about 7:50 p.m. on August 4, 2025, after reports of a car crashing into a parked vehicle and then into a utility pole. Officers from the Port Stephens-Hunter Police District responded to the scene and discovered the wreckage of the vehicle with the male driver as its sole occupant.

NSW Ambulance paramedics treated the man at the scene and rushed him to hospital in critical condition. Despite medical efforts, he succumbed to his injuries a short time later. His identity has not yet been formally confirmed, and police are working to notify his next of kin.

The exact cause of the crash is not yet known. Police established a crime scene and launched a full investigation into the incident. Officers remained on site into the evening, conducting forensic examinations and gathering evidence from the crash location.

Authorities have stated that all possible factors, such as driver error, medical episode, vehicle malfunction, or external conditions, will be considered as part of the ongoing investigation. At this stage, there is no indication of foul play, but police have not ruled anything out.

Residents have expressed concern, noting that while Eurimbla Street is typically quiet, the area can be difficult to navigate at night due to poor lighting and limited visibility. Some have called for improved street safety measures in the area, including additional signage or lighting.

The road was temporarily closed during the investigation, with traffic diverted while emergency crews cleared debris and completed their assessment. Police are urging any witnesses or motorists with dashcam footage from the area around the time of the crash to come forward to assist with inquiries.

The tragic accident is a sobering reminder of how quickly road conditions can turn deadly. Police continue to remind drivers to stay alert, obey speed limits, and be especially cautious in residential neighborhoods where unexpected hazards may arise.

Further updates will be provided once the man’s identity is confirmed and additional details are available from the investigation.
