A tragic jet ski accident on the Georges River in Sydney’s south has left a 15-year-old boy dead and his 14-year-old friend seriously injured.

Emergency services were called to the scene near Tom Uglys Bridge in Sylvania at around 6 p.m. on Tuesday after two girls on the shoreline spotted debris in the water and heard cries for help. They found a 14-year-old boy drifting in and out of consciousness.

Police believe the two boys collided with an obstacle, possibly a barge, while riding a jet ski in the dark. Both were thrown into the water. The 15-year-old was later found dead nearby.

A police officer who arrived first at the scene dove into the water and pulled the surviving boy to shore. He was rushed to Sydney Children’s Hospital with severe injuries, including a severed arm. Inspector Timothy Carter commended the officer’s quick response, calling it “heroic.”

“The police have done their best to try and save these kids’ lives,” Carter said. “We feel deep sympathy for the families involved.”

The father of the injured teen told 9News the boys were likely heading home when the crash happened.

Family and friends have expressed their grief, with condolences pouring in for the boy who lost his life.

Authorities are continuing to investigate the circumstances of the crash.
