A 16-year-old boy has been charged with multiple assault offences after allegedly knocking over a 70-year-old woman while fleeing police through a shopping centre in Bathurst, New South Wales.

The incident occurred on Thursday afternoon, 24 July 2025, when officers from the Chifley Police District approached the teenager on William Street. Police were speaking with the boy in relation to an alleged assault that took place the previous day, Wednesday 23 July, on Howick Street, also in Bathurst.

According to authorities, the teenager allegedly fled on foot while officers attempted to speak with him. The pursuit led through a nearby shopping centre where, during the chase, the boy allegedly collided with a 70-year-old woman, knocking her to the ground.

NSW Police officers immediately stopped to assist the injured woman and contacted paramedics. NSW Ambulance crews arrived on the scene shortly after and treated the woman before transporting her to Bathurst Base Hospital. She was admitted in a stable condition.

The teenager was located and arrested a short time later. He was taken to Bathurst Police Station where he was formally charged with several offences, including three counts of assault occasioning actual bodily harm. Additional charges included resisting or hindering a police officer in the execution of their duties, assaulting a police officer without causing actual bodily harm, and common assault.

Authorities have not released the name of the teenager due to his age, in accordance with legal protections for minors. He is expected to appear before a children’s court on Friday, 25 July 2025.

The alleged assault on Howick Street, which prompted the initial police contact, is also under investigation. No further details about that incident have been made public at this time.

Local residents have expressed concern about the growing number of youth-related incidents in the area, though police have not indicated whether this case is connected to any broader trend. Chifley Police District officers are continuing their inquiries and have urged anyone with information about either incident to come forward.

The case has drawn attention due to the involvement of an elderly victim and the public nature of the pursuit, which occurred during busy hours in a local shopping centre.

Authorities have reminded the public that all individuals are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
