Police Probe Shooting Incident in Woodridge

Queensland Police are investigating a shooting in Woodridge, a suburb south of Brisbane, that left a 30-year-old man injured on July 28, 2025, raising concerns about rising crime in the area. The incident, believed to involve individuals known to each other, has prompted a crime scene investigation and calls for public assistance, amid broader criticism of state safety measures.

The shooting occurred around 8:00 p.m. on North Road, Woodridge, when police patrolling North Street were approached by a man with a gunshot wound to his leg. Officers provided first aid before the victim, a Browns Plains resident, was transported to Princess Alexandra Hospital in serious but stable condition. Queensland Police Service (QPS) declared a crime scene, with initial findings suggesting an altercation at a nearby address led to the shooting. “We believe this was not a random act,” said a QPS spokesperson, emphasizing no ongoing threat to the public. Investigators are seeking witnesses and urging anyone with CCTV or dashcam footage to contact Policelink or Crime Stoppers at 1800 333 000.

Woodridge residents expressed alarm, with local shop owner Ahmed Khalil telling 9News, “We hear about stabbings, now shootings—it’s getting out of hand”. The suburb, no stranger to crime, has seen violent incidents before, including a 2020 fatal fire and a 2022 stabbing. Critics argue the NSW Labor government’s soft approach to crime exacerbates such incidents, with Opposition Leader Mark Speakman calling for tougher sentencing laws. “Labor’s focus on rehabilitation over punishment leaves communities vulnerable,” he said on Sky News. Queensland’s road toll and crime statistics, with 160 deaths reported by QPS this year, further fuel demands for stronger enforcement.

The investigation, led by Logan District detectives, is ongoing, with no arrests reported yet. Community leaders are pressing for more police patrols and better funding for local safety initiatives, arguing that state resources are misdirected toward urban projects. As Woodridge grapples with this latest violence, the pressure is on authorities to deliver answers and restore confidence in public safety.
