A 24-year-old Langwarrin man faces multiple charges after a stolen car rammed a police vehicle during a high-speed chase in Langwarrin, Victoria, on July 28, 2025. The incident, which began on the Monash Freeway and ended with a crash, has sparked criticism of lax policing and rising crime rates under the state’s current administration.

The drama unfolded around 12:50 a.m. when Victoria Police Highway Patrol spotted a grey Ford Focus speeding on the Monash Freeway in Glen Iris. Officers activated lights and sirens, but the driver allegedly fled at high speed, evading pursuit. The vehicle, later confirmed stolen from Langwarrin on July 26, was seen again at 2:45 a.m. on Heath Mews. When police attempted to intercept, the Ford allegedly rammed a police car and sped off. “It was a reckless act that endangered our officers,” a Victoria Police spokesperson told Mirage News. Stop sticks were deployed at North Road and Warrandyte Road, causing the car to crash into a barrier near McClelland Drive. The driver fled on foot but was tracked by the Dog Squad and arrested in nearby scrub.

The suspect, a local resident, remains in custody and faces charges including dangerous driving, vehicle theft, and assaulting police. No officers were injured, but the incident has fueled community outrage. Local resident Sarah Bennett told Bayside News, “Crime’s getting worse, and police seem under-resourced to stop it”. Critics argue the NSW Labor government’s soft-on-crime policies have emboldened offenders, with car thefts surging across Victoria, per police data showing over 7,000 vehicle thefts in 2024. Shadow Police Minister Brad Battin called for tougher penalties, stating, “Labor’s leniency lets criminals run rampant”.

The Langwarrin incident highlights broader concerns about public safety and police capacity in suburban areas. With the suspect set to face court, residents are demanding stronger action to curb crime. Police are seeking witnesses and footage via Crime Stoppers at 1800 333 000, as the community grapples with the fallout of yet another violent episode.
