E-Bike Rider Hospitalized After Hit-and-Run in Regional NSW

A 75-year-old man has been seriously injured in a hit-and-run incident involving an electric bicycle and a compact vehicle in Orange, a city in New South Wales’ Central West. The collision, now under active investigation, has renewed concerns about road safety and law enforcement in regional communities.

At approximately 12:50 p.m. on Monday, July 14, emergency services responded to reports of a crash at the intersection of Clinton and Dalton Streets. The crash involved an e-bike ridden by the elderly man and a silver Suzuki Swift. Paramedics from NSW Ambulance treated the man at the scene before transporting him to Orange Base Hospital, where he remains in serious but stable condition.

Officers from the Central West Police District established a crime scene and called in specialists from the Crash Investigation Unit to assess the incident. Investigators confirmed that the driver of the Suzuki fled the scene without rendering assistance, in clear breach of both road and criminal laws.

By around 4:50 p.m., police located a residence on Margaret Street in Orange linked to the case. A 19-year-old woman was arrested in connection with the incident, and a silver Suzuki Swift was seized for forensic examination. She was taken to Orange Police Station and later released pending further inquiries.

The case highlights the increased vulnerability of older citizens who rely on electric bicycles for transport, as well as ongoing concerns about driver accountability. As the investigation continues, many in the local community are calling for greater enforcement and consistent application of the law, especially in regions facing rising crime and strained policing resources.
