Alfredton Break-In Leads Police to Cannabis House

A suspected illegal cannabis grow house has been discovered in the quiet Ballarat suburb of Alfredton, Victoria, following a reported break-in early Monday morning. The incident has sparked a police investigation, with authorities now working to uncover the full extent of the drug operation.

Victoria Police responded to a call just after 1:10 a.m. when nearby residents on Kilkenny Drive reported hearing several loud bangs. When officers arrived at the scene, they found the front door of the house had been forcibly kicked in and was left heavily damaged. No occupants were found inside the property during the initial sweep.

However, officers did uncover what has been described as a “significant cannabis setup” operating inside the home. The cultivation appeared to be professionally arranged, with the scale and equipment suggesting a large-volume operation. Authorities believe the property had been used exclusively for growing cannabis.

A crime scene guard was posted at the residence overnight to preserve the scene, and a forensic team is scheduled to conduct a full search and evidence collection throughout the day. Police have not yet confirmed how long the operation has been running or whether the house had been under prior surveillance.

The Ballarat Divisional Response Unit has taken over the investigation. Detectives are now examining whether the reported break-in was connected to the drug setup. Possibly a rival group attempting to steal the crop, or simply a coincidental act of vandalism or burglary.

No arrests have been made, and police are urging the public to assist. “We’re asking anyone who may have seen unusual activity around Kilkenny Drive in recent days, especially late Sunday night or early Monday morning, to contact us or Crime Stoppers,” a police spokesperson said.

The case adds to growing concerns across regional Victoria about the rise in concealed drug operations within residential neighborhoods. Authorities warn that these illegal grow houses not only contribute to the black market drug trade but also pose fire risks and structural damage due to tampered electrical systems and poor ventilation.

As investigations continue, residents are reminded to report suspicious behavior in their communities. Police have emphasized the importance of early reporting to prevent similar setups from taking root in suburban areas.
