Australian Labor Members of Parliament (MPs) have expressed frustration with Prime Minister Anthony Albanese’s response to Israel’s planned military operation to take control of Gaza City. On August 9, 2025, Australia joined Germany, Italy, New Zealand, and the United Kingdom in issuing a joint statement condemning Israel’s military escalation, citing concerns over potential violations of international humanitarian law, according to the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC).

Israel’s security cabinet, led by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, approved plans to expand military control over Gaza City. This strategy has drawn widespread international criticism. Reports from Israeli media, referenced by ABC, indicate that the Israel Defence Forces (IDF) Chief of Staff has expressed concerns about the operational risks, including the impact on hostages and the worsening humanitarian situation. The Gaza Health Ministry has reported approximately 61,300 Palestinian deaths since October 7, 2023. These figures include both civilians and combatants, with about half reportedly women and children.

Labor MP Ed Husic highlighted public dissatisfaction with the government’s response, citing demonstrations such as the march across Sydney Harbour Bridge on August 3, 2025, opposing the Israeli military actions. He emphasized calls within the Australian public for stronger government measures. Foreign Minister Penny Wong, representing Australia in the joint statement, underscored the severe humanitarian crisis and urged a ceasefire and increased humanitarian aid to Gaza.

However, some Labor MPs have criticized the government’s approach as lacking substantive follow-through, noting the absence of new sanctions or significant policy changes. Opposition figures, including Liberal National Party (LNP) MP Andrew Hastie, have questioned the effectiveness of Labor’s foreign policy in influencing the conflict, as reported by 9news.com.au.

Germany’s decision to suspend military exports to Israel, reported by ABC, has been contrasted with Australia’s more restrained response, intensifying debates on the country’s stance. Meanwhile, Israeli plans to displace up to one million residents of Gaza City by October 7, 2025, as reported by The Times of Israel, add urgency to calls for decisive action.
