A 20-year-old driver has been intercepted after allegedly speeding more than 80 kilometers per hour over the legal limit in Glen Waverley, a suburb in Melbourne’s southeast. The incident occurred shortly after midnight on Tuesday, during a routine road safety operation conducted by the Nunawading Highway Patrol.

Police say the vehicle was first detected traveling outbound on the Monash Freeway near Blackburn Road around 12:15 a.m. Officers using a laser speed detection device reportedly clocked the car at over 130 kilometers per hour in a 100 kilometers per hour zone. However, when the driver noticed police presence, he allegedly accelerated further to speeds exceeding 180 kilometers per hour.

The vehicle, a Ford Ranger Wildtrak, was intercepted by police near the EastLink exit. Officers activated their emergency lights and safely brought the car to a stop without incident. The driver, a resident of Dandenong, was alone in the vehicle at the time.

The young man, who is believed to hold a probationary license, was participating in Victoria’s Graduated Licensing System, which places strict conditions on new drivers. P-platers in Victoria are prohibited from exceeding the speed limit and face severe penalties for high-risk driving behaviors.

As a result of the alleged offense, the vehicle was immediately impounded for 30 days under Victoria’s hoon laws. An impound fee of $1,000 applies. Police confirmed that the driver is expected to be charged on summons with excessive speeding and other traffic-related offenses. He will be required to appear in court at a later date.

The operation during which the incident occurred was part of Operation Trinity, a statewide Victoria Police initiative that targets dangerous driving, unlicensed operation of vehicles, and high-risk road behaviors. The campaign is especially focused on improving safety among young drivers and reducing the incidence of preventable road trauma.

Authorities have emphasized that excessive speeding remains one of the leading causes of serious injuries and fatalities on Victorian roads. They continue to urge all drivers, especially those on probationary licenses, to follow speed limits and drive responsibly.

Investigations are ongoing, and Victoria Police has stated that further enforcement activities will continue throughout the year to curb reckless driving.
