Police in New South Wales have launched an investigation into a late-night shooting incident that occurred in Sydney’s south-west suburb of Prairiewood, with authorities treating the case as a public place shooting.

At approximately 11:25pm on Friday, 25 July 2025, emergency services responded to reports of multiple gunshots being fired into a residential unit on Calabria Lane. Officers from the Fairfield City Police Area Command arrived on the scene shortly after the incident was reported.

Inside the unit at the time of the shooting was an 80-year-old woman. Fortunately, no injuries were sustained, and the woman was unharmed. Despite the lack of casualties, police have described the incident as extremely serious due to the clear risk posed to public safety.

A crime scene was established at the property, and forensic officers began a detailed examination of the premises early Saturday morning. Police are continuing to collect evidence from the scene and are canvassing the area for witnesses or surveillance footage that may aid in the investigation.

According to initial information provided to investigators, a white Ford Ranger was seen in the vicinity at the time of the incident. Detectives are appealing for any information that may help identify the vehicle or its occupants.

While investigations remain in the early stages, police currently believe the shooting may have been a case of mistaken identity. They have also confirmed that there is no known link between this incident and a separate shooting that took place recently in Croydon Park.

Authorities are urging members of the public who were in the Prairiewood area around the time of the shooting to come forward. Dashcam or mobile phone footage captured between 11:00pm and midnight in the vicinity of Calabria Lane may be particularly helpful to the ongoing investigation.

Anyone with relevant information is encouraged to contact Fairfield Police Station directly or call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000. Reports can also be submitted securely online via the Crime Stoppers NSW website at https://nsw.crimestoppers.com.au. All information provided will be treated with the strictest confidence, and callers can remain anonymous.

Police have also reminded the public that information about this incident should not be reported via social media platforms, including those operated by NSW Police, in order to protect the integrity of the investigation.

The investigation remains active, and further updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
