Pastor and Churchgoer Disarm Knife Attacker in Late-Night Adelaide Church Incident

ADELAIDE—A quiet evening service at a local church in Croydon Park turned dangerous on Saturday night when a man allegedly armed with a knife attempted to assault a member of the congregation. Thanks to the swift actions of the church’s pastor and a visiting attendee, the situation was brought under control before anyone was seriously harmed.

According to police reports, the incident unfolded just after 8:00 p.m. (post meridiem) at the Croydon Park Community Church. A guest reportedly stepped outside to use the outdoor facilities when a man, later confirmed to be from the local area, approached and allegedly threatened him with a knife. The commotion quickly drew attention from others inside the church.

Without hesitation, Pastor Ryan Pickard and another attendee rushed outside and confronted the suspect. Witnesses said the man attempted to flee but was quickly tackled to the ground by the pair, who held him down until officers from South Australia Police (SAPOL) arrived at the scene.

“He kept yelling, ‘I have a knife, let me go,’ but they held him there until the authorities showed up,” said Gayath Rivijayam, who was present during the incident. “It was frightening, but their response likely stopped something far worse.”

SAPOL confirmed that the 51-year-old male has been charged with aggravated assault and remains in custody. Officers commended the individuals who intervened, noting their courage under pressure but also warning the public to exercise caution in such situations.

Pastor Pickard’s wife, Yvette Pickard, said her husband did not hesitate when he realized someone was in danger. “He just reacted. He’s always been someone who puts others first,” she told local reporters.

The church has yet to release a formal statement, but members have praised the pastor and guest for their quick thinking and bravery. No serious injuries were reported, and the church resumed services the following morning under additional security.

The incident has prompted renewed calls for improved safety measures around places of worship, particularly during evening events. While rare, these moments underscore the need for community awareness and preparedness.
