A man has been caught driving at more than five times the legal alcohol limit after being intercepted by police in Springvale early this morning.

According to Victoria Police, officers were conducting proactive patrols in a high-risk driving area when they spotted a Holden travelling along the Princes Highway at around 1am.

Police attempted to pull the vehicle over, but the driver allegedly abandoned the car and ran towards a nearby property. Officers quickly pursued and detained him.

A preliminary breath test was conducted at the scene, returning a positive reading for alcohol. The driver then underwent an evidentiary breath analysis, which recorded an alleged blood alcohol concentration (BAC) of 0.260, more than five times Victoria’s legal limit of 0.05.

The driver, a 35-year-old man from Mulgrave, was immediately banned from driving. Police confirmed his licence was suspended on the spot.

His car was impounded for 30 days under Victoria’s vehicle impoundment laws, with the storage cost set at $1,159. Authorities stated that the man will be charged on summons for high-range drink driving offences and is expected to appear in Dandenong Magistrates’ Court at a later date.

Police have reiterated their commitment to removing dangerous drivers from the roads, particularly those in high-risk areas such as the stretch of Princes Highway where the incident occurred.

“Drivers with high-range blood alcohol readings present a serious danger to themselves and other road users,” a Victoria Police spokesperson said. “We will continue to target impaired driving through proactive patrols and roadside testing.”

High-range drink driving is a major road safety concern in Victoria. Under state law, drivers caught with a BAC of 0.15 or above face severe penalties, including heavy fines, lengthy licence disqualifications, vehicle impoundment, and possible imprisonment.

Victoria Police urge all motorists to make alternative travel arrangements if they have been drinking. Options such as designated drivers, taxis, or rideshare services can prevent dangerous situations and save lives.

The man’s court date will be determined in the coming weeks.
