A 13-year-old Chinese exchange student has been charged with murder following the alleged stabbing of another teenage girl at a home in Edgeworth, near Newcastle, New South Wales.

Emergency services were called to a residence on Euston Close at approximately 10:20pm on Monday, responding to reports of a stabbing. Upon arrival, officers found a 14-year-old girl, also a Chinese exchange student, suffering from a stab wound to the torso.

Paramedics treated the teenager at the scene before rushing her to hospital in critical condition. Despite medical efforts, she later succumbed to her injuries.

NSW Police confirmed that both girls had travelled from China to Australia on an exchange program. The program allows international students to live with local host families while attending school and visiting areas across the Hunter region.

According to Superintendent Tracy Chapman of the Lake Macquarie Police District, the two students had only arrived in Australia eight days prior to the incident. They were scheduled to return to China on August 16.

“They were staying with a host family and were attending a local school while participating in cultural activities,” Supt Chapman said during a press conference. “This is a tragic situation. NSW Police continue to work closely with the exchange program coordinators to ensure all appropriate notifications and procedures are being followed.”

The 13-year-old girl was arrested at the scene and has since been charged with murder. She is expected to appear in a Children’s Court on Wednesday. Due to her age, her identity cannot be disclosed under Australian law.

Police are continuing their investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident. Authorities have confirmed that there are no ongoing threats to the public.

The Chinese embassy has reportedly been notified, and consular assistance is expected to be provided for the families of both girls.

Local residents have expressed shock at the tragedy, with some describing the area as generally peaceful and quiet. The host family involved has not made any public statement at this time.

Further details are expected to emerge as court proceedings begin and the investigation continues.
