NSW Police Renew Appeal in Heather Marks Case

Police in New South Wales are renewing efforts to locate a man who may hold critical information in the decades-old disappearance of Heather Marks, last seen in April 1983.

As part of the 2025 Forever Loved Missing Persons Week, authorities have launched a fresh appeal for public assistance in solving the mystery surrounding the Rozelle woman’s disappearance.

Heather Marks, 53 at the time, was last spotted walking towards the Leichhardt swimming pool on Glover Street, Rozelle, around 9:30am on Wednesday, 13 April 1983. She lived with several medical conditions and has not been seen or heard from since. Despite extensive searches by her family and the Leichhardt Police Area Command, Heather was declared deceased in 2008 by the NSW Deputy State Coroner, though no cause of death was determined.

Police are particularly interested in identifying Heather’s former partner, known only as “Ray.” He is believed to have been an interstate truck driver who frequently travelled between Sydney and Melbourne. Heather’s family hopes Ray or anyone with information about him will come forward.

Natalie Jackson, Heather’s granddaughter, is urging the public to help solve the decades-long mystery. “To everyone else, my grandmother is a missing person, but to us she is just really missing,NSW Police say more than 10,000 people are reported missing in the state each year. Assistant Commissioner Scott Cook of the State Crime Command emphasized the ongoing importance of long-term investigations. “Missing Persons Week is not just about awareness, it’s a call to action. Even the smallest detail could help bring peace to families who have waited for decades.”

Minister for Police and Counter-terrorism, Yasmin Catley, highlighted the emotional toll these cases have on loved ones. “No family should be left in the dark for four decades. If you know something, no matter how minor, please contact Crime Stoppers.”

This year’s Missing Persons Week runs from Sunday, 3 August to Saturday, 9 August, focusing on the experiences and ongoing grief of families still seeking answers.
