In a closed-door meeting with Israel’s ambassador, Foreign Affairs Minister Penny Wong raised concerns over Israel’s military actions in Gaza, urging adherence to international law and increased humanitarian assistance.

On August 2, 2025, Foreign Minister Penny Wong met privately with Israeli Ambassador Amir Maimon at Parliament House in Canberra. According to federal government sources, Wong used the meeting—requested by the Israeli embassy—to call on Israel to comply with international humanitarian law and facilitate greater access to food aid for civilians in Gaza. The discussion comes amid growing global scrutiny of humanitarian conditions in the region.

The meeting followed statements from international and Israeli-based organisations, including B’Tselem, which have accused Israel of restricting humanitarian aid. A joint declaration by Australia and 27 other countries recently cited reports that over 800 Palestinians were killed while attempting to access food. Wong’s remarks align with Australia’s recent diplomatic position, including a joint statement in July 2025 with countries such as the United Kingdom and Canada, condemning Israel’s aid restrictions as “dangerous” and “inhumane.” She reiterated Australia’s call for a ceasefire, the release of hostages, and the unimpeded delivery of essential aid.

Israel’s military operation began after the October 7, 2023, Hamas-led attack, which resulted in the deaths of approximately 1,200 Israelis and the taking of 250 hostages. Since then, more than 52,000 Palestinians have been reported killed in Gaza, according to figures from the territory’s health ministry. Wong’s private discussion also reflects Australia’s evolving stance at the United Nations, which included supporting a December 2024 resolution calling for a permanent ceasefire. Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar has criticised Australia’s position, suggesting it undermines bilateral ties—an assertion Wong rejected, stating that support for international law should not be interpreted as anti-Israel.

The Albanese government has also faced domestic pressure to take a stronger position on the humanitarian crisis in Gaza. Wong’s meeting represents an effort to balance Australia’s diplomatic relationship with Israel while addressing ongoing concerns about civilian welfare. Some Labor members have called for further action, pointing to continued aid blockages and rising casualties.
