Perth Uber Driver Attacked with Metal Rod

A 33-year-old Uber driver is recovering in hospital after an alleged violent assault by passengers in the early hours of August 1 in Perth.

Usman Malik, a father of two and full-time ride-share driver, was reportedly attacked with a metal rod by passengers inside his vehicle while driving in Wembley. The incident occurred at approximately 4:00 a.m. on Harborne Street. According to initial reports, the alleged assault caused Malik to lose control of his Toyota station wagon, which then crashed into a tree and a wall.

Malik was transported to Royal Perth Hospital, where he remains in recovery. According to his wife, Sumaira Arshad, he sustained multiple serious injuries, including a broken jaw and a blood clot near his eye that has affected his vision. Arshad shared details of his condition on a GoFundMe page launched to help support his recovery and their family.

A video captured shortly after the crash shows Malik trapped in the vehicle, calling for help. A local resident told 9News Perth that he witnessed one of the passengers trying to force open a car door. CCTV footage from nearby reportedly shows several individuals leaving the scene on foot before emergency services arrived.

Malik is expected to undergo specialist surgery and faces a long recovery period. His wife said the family is facing financial hardship, as Malik is unable to work and continues to support relatives both in Australia and Pakistan.

“Usman works tirelessly to support his family and education,” Arshad wrote. “He not only drives full-time but also studies and manages family responsibilities.”

By Saturday evening, the GoFundMe campaign had raised around $7,000 to assist with medical and living expenses.

Western Australia Police have confirmed that an investigation into the incident is ongoing. No arrests have been made, and authorities have not released details about the suspects. They are urging anyone with information to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
