Newport Street Fight Leaves Four Injured, Two Arrested

A serious public disorder incident unfolded on Commercial Road in Pillgwenlly, Newport, on Friday afternoon, resulting in the arrest of two men and the hospitalisation of four others. The disturbance, which involved multiple individuals fighting in the street, prompted a large police response and the closure of part of the road.

Gwent Police responded to reports of a fight at around 3:20 pm on August 1. The confrontation took place outside a kebab shop along the busy stretch of Commercial Road. Videos shared on social media appeared to show individuals wielding large bladed weapons, possibly knives or swords, as several people sustained visible injuries.

In response, officers established a cordon between Albert Street and Frederick Street to secure the area. Witnesses reported seeing six police cars and two vans at the scene, as officers worked to manage traffic and secure evidence. Pedestrians were diverted along alternative routes while drivers with parked vehicles inside the cordon were allowed to retrieve them under police supervision.

A spokesperson for Gwent Police confirmed that two men have been taken into custody in connection with the altercation. Four people were taken to the hospital for treatment of injuries described as non-life-threatening and not expected to cause long-term harm. Police have not released the names or ages of those involved at this stage.

“We’re investigating reports of violent disorder on Commercial Road in Newport following a call received at around 3:20 pm. Two men are in custody and four individuals have been taken to hospital for treatment,” the spokesperson said. “None of the injuries are believed to be life-threatening or life-changing.”

Investigators were observed collecting evidence at the scene throughout the evening, and officers remained present until at least 7:00 pm. The full circumstances leading to the incident are still being determined, and police have not yet confirmed whether any weapons have been recovered.

Commercial Road, which features a mix of residential homes and small businesses, remained closed into the evening. The incident has sparked concern among residents, some of whom witnessed the fight and expressed shock at the level of violence.

Authorities are urging members of the public who witnessed the event or have relevant mobile phone or dashcam footage to come forward. Anyone with information is asked to contact Gwent Police to assist with the ongoing investigation.
