Trump Sets August 8 Deadline for Russia-Ukraine Peace Deal, U.S. Tells United Nations

The United States has notified the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) that President Donald Trump expects a peace agreement between Russia and Ukraine to be reached by August 8. The announcement, delivered by a senior U.S. diplomat, signals a firm push from Washington to bring an end to the war that has devastated Ukraine since 2022.

Addressing the 15-member council on Thursday, U.S. Deputy Ambassador to the U.N. John Kelley stated, “Both Russia and Ukraine must negotiate a ceasefire and durable peace. It is time to make a deal. President Trump has made clear that this must be done by August 8. The United States is prepared to implement additional measures to secure peace.” While Kelley did not specify what those measures might be, the statement made clear the administration’s intent to increase pressure if progress stalls.

The conflict, which erupted following Russia’s large-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, has caused extensive loss of life, infrastructure damage, and economic disruption across Europe and beyond. Though multiple negotiation efforts have taken place over the years, a lasting settlement has yet to be achieved. The Trump administration’s latest move suggests a calculated shift toward a more time-sensitive and results-oriented approach.

Throughout the war, the U.S. has played a central role in supporting Ukraine, supplying weapons, intelligence, and humanitarian aid. But the administration has also stressed that a drawn-out military conflict is unsustainable, and has called on both parties to commit to diplomacy.

The August 8 timeline reflects a desire to move quickly, though its feasibility remains uncertain. Russia has not yet issued a formal response, and Ukrainian officials have reiterated that any meaningful talks must begin with the withdrawal of Russian forces from occupied territories.

While the United Nations is not leading direct negotiations, it continues to provide a forum for international engagement on the crisis. Some UNSC members expressed cautious hope during the Thursday session that Washington’s timeline could generate renewed diplomatic momentum after months of gridlock.

With just days remaining until the proposed deadline, attention is now on Moscow and Kyiv. The U.S. position is clear: a negotiated peace must be reached sooner, not later.
