A unit complex fire in Pialba prompted Queensland Police to issue an emergency declaration under the Public Safety Preservation Act (PSPA), urging residents to stay indoors and avoid the area.

A major fire broke out at a unit complex on Andrew Street in Pialba, Queensland, at approximately 1:17 AM on August 10, 2025, leading Queensland Police to declare an emergency under the Public Safety Preservation Act (PSPA). The declaration, enacted at 2:02 AM, established an exclusion zone encompassing Taylor Street, Neils Street, Torquay Road, and Boat Harbour Drive. Emergency services, including police and fire crews, responded swiftly to contain the blaze, which threatened nearby properties. Residents within the exclusion zone were instructed to remain indoors, close windows, and avoid unnecessary travel to ensure their safety.

The Queensland Police Service emphasized the need for caution, advising motorists to steer clear of the affected area due to potential hazards from smoke and emergency operations. “Members of the public are advised to avoid the area, and those within the exclusion zone are asked to remain indoors until further notice,” a police spokesperson stated. The fire’s intensity and the risk of smoke inhalation prompted the strict measures, with authorities prioritizing public safety. No injuries or fatalities have been reported, though the extent of property damage remains unclear as firefighting efforts continue.

Local residents expressed concern but appreciated the rapid response from emergency services. John Mitchell, a nearby resident, noted that the police and fire crews were “on the scene quickly, keeping everyone informed.” The cause of the fire has not yet been determined, with investigations expected to commence once the situation is under control. Queensland Fire and Emergency Services are working to extinguish the blaze, supported by police maintaining the exclusion zone to prevent interference with operations.

The incident underscores ongoing challenges with fire safety in densely populated areas like Pialba. Authorities have urged residents to remain vigilant and comply with directives to avoid complications. For emergencies, Queensland Police recommend calling Triple Zero (000) and, for non-urgent situations, contacting Policelink at 131 444. Updates will be provided as the situation develops, with the PSPA declaration remaining in effect until the fire is fully contained and the area deemed safe.
