Cambodia to Submit Trump for Nobel Peace Prize in Response to Border Dispute Resolution

Cambodia has announced a planned legal move to nominate former United States (U.S.) President Donald Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize, crediting him with helping to reduce tensions in a recent border conflict with Thailand. The nomination follows a ceasefire agreement that brought an end to weeks of military escalation between the two Southeast Asian neighbors.

During a press conference on Monday, Cambodian Deputy Prime Minister Sun Chanthol stated that Trump played a significant diplomatic role in encouraging both parties to pursue peaceful dialogue. “His mediation helped restore peace and protect the livelihoods of thousands,” Chanthol said. While full details of the mediation have not been disclosed, Cambodian officials emphasized that Trump’s efforts created a platform for de-escalation.

The conflict, considered the most serious border incident in the region in more than ten years, resulted in casualties and the displacement of several communities near the contested zones. As part of the agreement reached last week, both Thai and Cambodian forces have withdrawn. The ceasefire is now being monitored by regional observers to ensure continued compliance.

The truce also helped Cambodia avoid potential economic consequences. Its garment industry, one of the country’s largest employers and a major contributor to its export revenue, was facing the risk of instability-driven trade disruptions. Cambodian authorities have linked Trump’s mediation efforts to the preservation of trade flow and the prevention of increased U.S. tariffs.

Cambodia’s proposed nomination of Trump is in the early stages of the Nobel Peace Prize process, which is governed by the statutes of the Nobel Foundation. These rules require all nominations to go through an independent evaluation and remain confidential until officially confirmed. The nomination itself does not imply any endorsement by the Nobel Committee.

Cambodia now joins a small group of countries, including Pakistan and Israel, that have expressed public support for Trump’s involvement in peace initiatives. However, Cambodian officials made no comments regarding Trump’s broader political views or actions, focusing solely on his role in this particular diplomatic development.

As of publication, neither the Royal Thai Government nor the United Nations (UN) has issued an official statement regarding the ceasefire or the planned nomination. Cambodian authorities have framed their legal submission as a recognition of diplomatic efforts to resolve conflicts through peaceful means.

This planned action reflects Cambodia’s broader aim to acknowledge global figures who contribute to regional stability and peace, regardless of political alignment.
