Cambodia Intends to Nominate Trump for Nobel Peace Prize Over Role in Border Mediation

Cambodia has announced plans to nominate former U.S. President Donald Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize, crediting him with playing a key role in defusing a recent border dispute with Thailand. The move comes after a ceasefire agreement ended weeks of rising tensions and military clashes between the two Southeast Asian nations.

According to Cambodian Deputy Prime Minister Sun Chanthol, Trump was instrumental in facilitating dialogue between the two countries. While details remain limited, Chanthol emphasized that Trump’s involvement helped create the conditions necessary for both sides to step back from the brink. “His mediation helped restore peace and protect the livelihoods of thousands,” he said at a press briefing on Monday.

The conflict, which represented the most intense fighting along the border in more than a decade, led to casualties and displaced numerous residents in disputed areas. Both governments have since withdrawn troops following the ceasefire, which is now being overseen by regional observers to ensure compliance.

In addition to curbing violence, the ceasefire helped shield Cambodia’s critical garment industry from potential U.S. trade penalties. The sector, a major economic driver employing hundreds of thousands, was vulnerable to disruption amid the instability. Cambodian officials have pointed to Trump’s involvement as a stabilizing factor during a critical time.

While the nomination process is still in its early stages, Cambodia joins countries like Pakistan and Israel in publicly supporting Trump’s peace-related efforts. However, officials were quick to note that the Nobel Committee operates independently and that any nomination must go through a confidential and impartial evaluation process.

Cambodia’s initiative reflects a broader recognition of diplomatic actions that contribute to regional peace, regardless of political affiliation. The government’s statement focused solely on Trump’s role in this specific mediation effort, steering clear of commentary on his wider policy positions.

As of now, neither Thailand’s government nor the United Nations has released an official response to the ceasefire or the proposed nomination. The Nobel Foundation’s rules mandate that all nominations remain confidential until formally announced.

By moving forward with the nomination, Cambodia is emphasizing the value of diplomatic resolution and signaling its appreciation for efforts that promote peace and stability in the region.
