Australian Army Fires Precision Strike Missile at Mount Bundey

On 25 July 2025, the Australian Army successfully launched its Precision Strike Missile (PrSM) from a High Mobility Artillery Rocket System (HIMARS) at the Mount Bundey Training Area in the Northern Territory. The missile accurately hit a target over 300 kilometers away in just over four minutes, reaching speeds above 4,000 kilometers per hour and an altitude near 60,000 feet. The test was part of Exercise Talisman Sabre 2025 and marked the first time Australia fired a PrSM from its own HIMARS platform.

The new long-range missile system represents a major advancement in Australia’s strike capabilities, with a current range exceeding 500 kilometers and planned upgrades extending this to 1,000 kilometers. The launch highlighted Australia’s commitment to strengthening its deterrence posture in the Indo-Pacific region and aligns with its long-term strategic defence priorities.

The test was conducted by the 14th Regiment of the 10th Brigade, the Australian Defence Force’s newly formed long-range fires unit based in Adelaide. The brigade had recently received its first HIMARS systems ahead of schedule, positioning it to play a critical role in the development of Australia’s land-based strike and integrated air defence capabilities.

The PrSM test was one of several major demonstrations held during Talisman Sabre 2025, a multinational military exercise involving over 40,000 personnel from 19 countries. These demonstrations are designed to improve interoperability and showcase integrated strike capabilities among allies.

While defence officials have praised the test as a strategic success, some domestic critics have raised concerns over the financial costs and Australia’s reliance on foreign defence technologies. Questions around sovereignty and long-term self-reliance continue to shape the public debate. Nevertheless, the PrSM launch signals a significant step forward in ensuring Australia’s readiness to address future regional security challenges.
