Unexpected Contender Vies for NSW Police Commissioner Role

Acting Commissioner Peter Thurtell has become a leading contender for the permanent role of New South Wales Police Commissioner following the early retirement of Karen Webb in June 2025. Thurtell, who stepped into the interim role on 9 June 2025, brings approximately 40 years of experience within the NSW Police Force, having served in numerous senior roles including Deputy Commissioner for Regional NSW and Executive Sponsor for Domestic and Family Violence. His appointment comes as the Minns Labor government oversees a competitive selection process involving several high-profile candidates.

Thurtell’s credentials include oversight of major law enforcement operations across the state. In May 2024, he led Operation Amarok VI, a targeted, four-day crackdown on high-risk domestic violence offenders. That initiative resulted in 554 arrests and more than 1,000 charges laid, demonstrating his operational leadership and commitment to community safety. Supporters point to his direct, regionally engaged leadership style and his responsiveness to officer welfare, including attention to psychological injury risks within the force, as key strengths distinguishing his candidacy.

The selection process, however, is highly competitive. Other prominent contenders include Deputy Commissioners Mal Lanyon, David Hudson, and Paul Pisanos, as well as former Deputy Commissioner Mick Willing. Lanyon is viewed as a strong contender due to his strategic oversight and visibility within government circles. Pisanos also has considerable support based on his regional experience and work with youth crime prevention initiatives.

Despite Thurtell’s long-standing service and strong track record, a reported but undisclosed 2022 incident may complicate his chances, as it allegedly affected his prior bid for the commissioner role. While details have not been confirmed, the matter is expected to attract attention during the final selection phase. Additionally, concerns have been raised in some quarters about the transparency of the selection process under the current government, though no formal criticism has been substantiated by official inquiry.

Thurtell has publicly affirmed his focus on community-focused policing, domestic violence intervention, and the wellbeing of officers. His leadership during complex field operations, including his earlier role in the 2012 search for fugitive Malcolm Naden, for which he received a Commissioner’s Commendation, underscores his tactical capability and crisis management skills. As the final decision approaches, Thurtell’s candidacy stands on the strength of his operational experience and long-standing service, potentially offering a steady hand at the helm of one of Australia’s largest police forces.
