Australia Showcases HIMARS Power at Talisman Sabre 2025

On July 14, 2025, Australia’s military fired its first High Mobility Artillery Rocket System (HIMARS) on home soil during Exercise Talisman Sabre, a multinational war game in Queensland, marking a bold step in bolstering Indo-Pacific security. Joined by United States (US) and Singapore forces, the event showcased Australia’s growing long-range strike capability, signaling strength amid regional tensions.

The HIMARS, a truck-mounted system capable of striking targets 400 kilometers away, was deployed at Shoalwater Bay Training Area alongside US F-35B fighter jets and other long-range weapons. Brigadier Nick Wilson, director general of the combined live-fire exercise, called it a “remarkable day,” noting it was the first time Australia, Singapore, and the US fired HIMARS together, as reported by Reuters. This debut, part of the largest-ever Talisman Sabre with over 35,000 troops from 19 nations, underscores Australia’s strategic pivot to counter China’s military expansion. The exercise, spanning from Christmas Island to the Coral Sea, also includes Japan, France, and South Korea, reinforcing allied unity.

Lieutenant General Joel Vowell, US Army Pacific Deputy Commanding General, emphasized the exercise’s purpose, stating, “Talisman Sabre is a deterrent mechanism because our ultimate goal is no war,” according to Australian Aviation. The Australian Defence Force (ADF) showcased its new UH-60M Black Hawks and Precision Strike Missile, highlighting investments in advanced capabilities. The HIMARS, recently acquired from the US, reflects Australia’s commitment to a “strategy of denial” in the Indo-Pacific, as Wilson noted in News.az. This aligns with regional allies’ efforts to maintain a free and open maritime domain.

While the current Labor government navigates domestic challenges, the ADF’s focus on interoperability and deterrence remains steadfast, driven by strategic imperatives over political cycles. Chinese surveillance ships, expected to monitor the drills as they have since 2017, underscore the exercise’s geopolitical weight, per Defense Industry Minister Pat Conroy’s comments in The Australian. Australia’s HIMARS debut sends a clear message: the nation is ready to stand firm with its allies, ensuring regional stability through strength and cooperation.
