Gilmour Space and Space BD Unite for Satellite Launch Solutions

This article highlights the strategic partnership between Gilmour Space Technologies and Space BD Inc., combining Australian launch capabilities with Japanese expertise to deliver innovative satellite launch services, enhancing access to space for global customers.

In a bold move to expand access to space, Australia’s Gilmour Space Technologies has joined forces with Japan’s Space BD Inc. to offer cutting-edge satellite launch services. Announced on 9 July 2025, this collaboration leverages Gilmour’s Eris rockets and ElaraSat platforms to provide dedicated and rideshare launch options from the Bowen Orbital Spaceport in North Queensland, Australia. The partnership taps into Space BD’s extensive experience, having supported over 90 satellite missions and 600 space-related projects, to open new opportunities for Japanese and global clients seeking reliable, cost-effective access to Low Earth Orbit (LEO).

The Bowen Orbital Spaceport’s strategic location offers unparalleled flexibility for Southern Hemisphere missions, enabling diverse orbital access. Gilmour’s Eris, a three-stage orbital launch vehicle, is designed to carry small satellites, with its maiden launch planned for no earlier than 16 July 2025, following rigorous testing and a launch permit from the Australian Space Agency (ASA). David Jervis, Head of Sales at Gilmour Space, emphasised the partnership’s potential: “This collaboration with Space BD, a leader in Japan’s space sector, opens doors to deliver Australian-made launch services across the Asia-Pacific.” The deal strengthens regional resilience, offering an alternative to traditional launch providers in a market prioritising supply chain assurance.

Space BD’s expertise in launch integration and satellite deployment, including experiments on the International Space Station (ISS), complements Gilmour’s innovative hybrid rocket technology. Mia Lee, Head of Launch Unit at Space BD, noted, “By leveraging Gilmour’s geographically advantageous launch capabilities and integrated services, we aim to fully support global customers in realising their space missions.” This partnership not only bolsters Japan–Australia space cooperation but also positions both companies to meet growing demand for flexible, secure launch solutions.

As global competition in space intensifies, this alliance underscores the importance of private-sector innovation in overcoming bureaucratic challenges within Australia’s regulatory framework. By uniting their strengths, Gilmour Space and Space BD are poised to redefine access to space, driving mission success for clients worldwide.
