Talisman Sabre 2025 Bolsters Defence Preparedness in Queensland

Exercise Talisman Sabre 2025, the largest bilateral military training between Australia and the United States, commenced on 13 July in Queensland, involving over 35,000 personnel from 19 nations. This biennial event, spanning until 4 August, strengthens alliances and combat readiness amid global tensions. The article examines the exercise’s scale, strategic importance, and regional impact.

Hosted by the Australian Defence Force (ADF), Talisman Sabre 2025 underscores Australia’s commitment to a secure Indo-Pacific. Conducted across Queensland, the Northern Territory, and Papua New Guinea for the first time, it features live-fire exercises, amphibious landings, and air combat operations. Vice Admiral Justin Jones, Chief of Joint Operations, highlighted its role in “deepening cooperation and force integration” with allies like the US, Canada, and Germany. Over 30,000 troops, including 200 from Germany’s 26th Parachute Regiment, are training in realistic scenarios, enhancing interoperability against potential threats.

The exercise’s scale has raised local concerns, with the ADF urging Queensland residents, particularly in Rockhampton and Shoalwater Bay, not to be alarmed by increased military activity. A marine danger zone at Shoalwater Bay, active until 17 July, has prompted warnings for yachties to avoid the area due to live ammunition use. Ken Wilson, ADF spokesman, emphasised safety, stating, “Training ensures our forces remain prepared to protect Australia’s interests.” The inclusion of New Zealand’s NH-90 helicopters, similar to the retired Australian MRH-90 Taipan, has drawn attention after a 2023 crash, though safety protocols are stringent.

Geopolitically, Talisman Sabre sends a strong message. The ADF expects Chinese surveillance vessels to monitor the exercises, as seen in previous years, reflecting Beijing’s interest in allied capabilities. This occurs as Prime Minister Anthony Albanese visits China, highlighting tensions the Labor government must navigate without compromising national security. The exercise’s expansion to Papua New Guinea, involving 130 Fijian troops, signals deeper Pacific alliances, countering external influence in the region.

Talisman Sabre 2025 showcases Australia’s resolve to maintain a robust defence posture. While the Labor government pushes diplomatic engagements, this exercise prioritises strength and readiness, ensuring Australia and its allies are equipped to face emerging global challenges with unwavering confidence.
